IS YOUR HIP OR KNEE SAD? WELCOME TO GLA:D®!
What Is GLA:D®?
GLA:D® is a structured program for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis that combines education with guided exercise, which is the most effective and recommended approach to managing symptoms. Originally developed by researchers in Denmark, the program is grounded in strong scientific evidence and is now used internationally, including across Australia.
The aim of GLA:D® is to help reduce joint pain and stiffness, improve strength and movement, and give people the confidence to stay active and involved in daily life.
Who Can Benefit From GLA:D®?
GLA:D® is appropriate for people of any age who have hip or knee osteoarthritis, whether symptoms are mild or severe. Research shows the program can help decrease pain, improve mobility, and enhance overall quality of life.
For some people, participating in GLA:D® may prevent or delay the need for joint replacement surgery. Evidence also suggests that those who complete the program before having hip or knee replacement surgery often experience a smoother and faster recovery.
Program Structure and Sessions
Australian best practice guidelines recommend education and exercise as first line treatments for hip and knee osteoarthritis. GLA:D® follows these recommendations closely.
The program includes:
An education session, focusing on understanding osteoarthritis and how to manage it
Twelve supervised exercise sessions, completed over six weeks (x2 p/week)
Each session lasts one hour and is delivered by a physiotherapist that has completed specific GLA:D® Australia training. Exercises are adjusted to suit your individual abilities and progress.
As part of the program, you will be asked to complete brief progress checks with our physiotherapists and have the choice to contribute de-identified data to ongoing osteoarthritis research. All information is used only to improve treatment and access to care for people with osteoarthritis.
Exercising With Osteoarthritis
Many people worry that exercise might worsen their joint pain. In fact, the right type of exercise is one of the most effective treatments for osteoarthritis. It can help reduce pain, increase joint support, and improve confidence with everyday activities.
When beginning new exercises, mild discomfort during or after a session is normal and usually settles within 24 hours. Our physiotherapists will teach you how to recognize acceptable pain levels and progress safely without causing long term flare ups.
Program Length and Long-Term Use
The core GLA:D® program runs for six weeks, with the option to continue beyond this if you wish. Some people use the program as a pathway toward other activities, such as gym based training or increasing general physical activity.
The strategies and exercises taught in GLA:D® are designed to be reused whenever needed.
